About SPF
SPF is a DNS record that says which servers may send email for your domain. The receiving server compares the sending IP address with that list.
A correct SPF record makes it harder for others to impersonate your domain and can reduce the chance of mail going to spam. Use it together with DKIM and DMARC.
How do I fix SPF?
- List every service that sends mail for you: your own server, Google Workspace, newsletter and sales tools, and so on.
- Put the include values recommended by only the services you use into one SPF record; do not add a second SPF TXT record for the same domain.
- Remove services you no longer use, publish the record, and check again after DNS has updated.
Frequently asked questions
What does the 10 DNS lookup limit mean?
While checking SPF, receivers can make at most 10 DNS queries while following items such as include, a, mx, and redirect. Above that limit, some receivers treat the record as invalid. Removing unused services and shortening nested include chains usually fixes it.
What does the 2 void lookup limit mean?
A void lookup is a DNS query made during SPF evaluation that does not return a useful result. It can happen no more than twice; additional void lookups can cause an SPF error. Fix typos or stale include, a, and mx entries.
Why did the result not change right after I updated the record?
DNS changes can take time to reach provider caches. Wait a little, then check the same domain again.
